How to elevate your winter wardrobe

I’m soo bored. Winter is going on for-effing-ever. Was that not the longest January in history? I’m completely bored with my winter wardrobe too. But I can’t afford to buy anything. Actually, I’m not even sure I want to buy anything at the minute. Although I’m going as far as these #Ruleof5 extremists who are only buying 5 items of clothing this year (what’s all that about?). I’m just waiting for the shiny new Spring stuff to come in stock.

So what to do in the interim? I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely guilty of wearing a particular outfit and then always wearing it the same way. Anyone else? To relieve the boredom, I thought it might be an idea to think about different ways to wear my boring winter clothes, so I could like them again. And I thought I’d share my efforts with you.

#Idea 1 – Tonal Dressing

Not a new concept, but definitely something I forget to do. Not only does tonal dressing make an outfit look more expensive, it has the added bonus of making you look taller if you’re a short arse like me. I especially love a winter white outfit. Make sure it’s machine washable though.

#Idea 3 – Summer Dress Winter Coat and Hiking Boots

What about getting some extra mileage out of your summer dresses? Add a roll neck underneath or a loose jumper over the top (more layers if you fancy it) with some chunky boots and you’re good to go.

#Idea 4 – Puffer and Tailoring

Doesn’t have to be a puffer really, I just liked this picture of @greceghanem – who you should follow on Instagram if you’re looking for style inspiration. She wears classic shapes in very bright colours and is brilliant at colour clashing. Worth checking out. Back to my point. What I love about this outfit is the mixture of the casual jacket paired with the smart tailoring of the trousers. Definitely one I’m going to be playing with.

#Idea 5 – Mixing Textures

I love the way this outfit has been put together. Arguably, another casual/smart hybrid, but for me, it’s all about the way the fabric and colours work together. I’ve got loads of slip skirts and whilst I haven’t got many patterned knits, it would work with stripes. I’ve got plenty of stripes. I love the way the hat matches the bag, which is also picked up in the jumper too.

#Idea 6 – Accessories

I’m crap at accessories. I like clean lines. I rarely wear belts, or scarves (I feel like I’m being strangled) but they can alter the look of your outfit. Adding a scarf and a different hat has totally changed the look of this outfit. Although her scrunchie looks a bit mental (what is it supposed to be? Cabbages?). Having said I’m crap, I do love layering chains and bracelets – have a look at #neckmess on Instagram for some other ideas.

App Alert

I’ve discovered a new app – Moonsift. This is sort of a pimped-up Pinterest. It allows you to keep track of stuff you want to buy. You can share from an app/website etc. and add it to a collection you’ve created. So you can while away the hours building a holiday wardrobe, or work wear, or whatever really. So you see a picture of something you like, and you set it up so you can save it to Moonsift. It even sends you notifications if an item on your wishlist has gone down in price. Clever no?

do let me know your styling tips too, to help me relieve the boredom. It’s still about 4 weeks until the clocks go forward and the evenings start to get lighter. Bring. It. On.
