This was actually on my list of things to do in the first lockdown, but I’ve only just got round to it. I’m feeling very virtuous and a bit smug. Here are my top tips.
- Pull every item out of your wardrobe. Warning – This bit is terrifying – it might be a good idea to have a gin/tea/soothing balm handy. Alternatively, you could do this in stages.
- Sort into the following three piles – keep, repair/dry clean and recycle/sell.
- The recycle/sell pile – I’ve never read any Marie Kondo, but if the whole “does this bring you joy” thing helps you decide whether to keep it or not, then by all means, crack on. The key is to be ruthless. Basically I threw out all the pieces that had never worked. Don’t forget your shoes. I had sixty hundred and fifty pairs of shoes that hurt/rubbed/I couldn’t walk in. Although to be honest, I kept all the ones I couldn’t walk in because, well, that’s not something I would take into consideration. ** See below for more details.
- If you can be arsed, sell your pieces on eBay. It has got a lot easier if you haven’t used it for a while. Works out your postage and everything. Depop and vinted are other options for selling clothes, but I believe they are for the young hipster types, and therefore not for me, but if you are blessed with youth and hipness, get stuck in. If you’ve got designer items to sell Vestiaire Collective is a great site. Recycle the rest.
- The repair/dry clean/ pile – it’s fairly self explanatory what to do with this. I can recommend a good seamstress in the Reigate area if anyone needs one, but most dry cleaners have a tailoring service. Get any shoes resoled.
- Now. The keep pile. First off, if you haven’t put all my summer clothes in storage then do that first. Ikea has masses of storage solutions that will all do the job very adequately. Click here for their full range.
However, if you’re after something a bit sexier, there are plenty of other options. Like these metal trunks from The Forest & Co. they’re currently reduced to £116.

Or these John Lewis Seagrass Boxes that fit under the bed £40

Ok, so now on to the putting everything back in the wardrobe. More gin needed for this bit too I think. There are a few different options here, by colour or by category – gymwear, casualwear, workwear, occasion wear etc. but it depends entirely on your wardrobe’s configuration and your preference. I like to arrange by colour. I hang my coats, jackets, dresses, skirts and trousers and fold knitwear and tees. I believe Marie Kondo has a method for folding too, but you’d have to check with her for that.
And that’s it. Celebrate with a large gin. Try and sort your wardrobe twice a year to minimise the terror factor.
Next week, spring trends. Or ideas on ways to spend the money you made on eBay sales and fill up your newly created wardrobe space.
Have a good week (or at least hopefully not a totally crap one).
** For the record, I never said I was hindered by logic, I said I liked clothes. If it’s a logic blog you want, you’ve come to the wrong site.
